Advocacy

The LGBTQ Commission monitors legislation that directly or indirectly affects the LGBTQ community in Washington. In collaboration with supportive legislators and state agencies, the Commission works to pass legislation that advances the rights of the LGBTQ community. Each year, the Commission votes on legislative priorities and sets a course of action that includes:

  1. Building alliances with community partners
  2. Engage legislators in conversations about LGBTQ needs in their districts
  3. Listening to members of the LGBTQ community through community forums and other events
  4. Work with legislators to draft legislation, or support legislation already filed, that directly or indirectly affects the LGBTQ community
  5. Coordinate with LGBTQ people to advocate for legislation that positively affects our communities
  6. Coordinate with other Commissions and state agencies for intersectional work
  7. Celebrate with the community when legislation that supports LGBTQ causes is approved

In addition to reaching out to your state legislators (which you should absolutely do!), you are always welcome to reach out to contact@lgbtq.wa.gov to share your feedback on legislation. It is very helpful for us to hear your thoughts so that we can best advise the Governor and the Legislature on what is most important to our community. Please reference the bill number in the subject line of the email.

Interested in following along with the Commission's priorities this session? After our public meeting on January 17 and 18th, our website will be updated with bills that we are tracking and monitoring throughout session.
